The earth beneath me shakes. The walls creak and the doorways shimmy and the windows are attempting to escape from their panes. It comes in waves that knock over everything in their path. Then they become silent to tease you, and just when you get comfortable again another giant wave comes, more destructive than the last, to sweep you off your feet and swallow you. It’s entered my bones and my muscles and my blood, rattling around inside of me, constantly, endlessly. My body rumbles even in stillness. Even when the waves have subsided. The earthquake is within me still.
